BULAWAYO secondary schools have been urged to embrace darts in their sporting curricula as it improves mental concentration and precision in both throwing and calculation.
National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) Bulawayo Metropolitan provincial head-in-charge of darts Phineas Ndlovu said the province will have darts competitions for the first time this year.
He said schools will start from inter-house competitions right up to district competitions so that they can assemble a provincial team to represent Bulawayo in inter-provincials set for Kadoma from June 15-17.
Some schools that already have active darts players in the province include Eveline, Mandwandwe, Magwegwe, Montrose, Milton and Cowdray Park Secondary.
“We call on our schools to come along and play darts. As leadership, we were encouraged upon realising that pupils are very enthusiastic about the sport. This game is not taxing like other sports and we certainly will not have any concerns of age cheating,” said Ndlovu.
He said they were working with the National Darts Association of Zimbabwe (Ndaz).
“The whole idea is to try and demystify perceptions that darts is a ‘boozers’ game because it provides entertainment and helps in improving one’s mental concentration and accuracy in both throwing and calculating,” said Ndlovu.
According to the calendar of events, the inter-schools competition must be held by May 20, with each school allowed to field six players in three age groups.
The Bulawayo inter-district competitions have tentatively been set for Raylton Sports Club on a date yet to be confrimed.
