CAPS United have called for caution and patience after the arrest of skipper Method Mwanjali and Archford Gutu on attempted murder charges following an alleged knife attack in a night club brawl in the early hours of Saturday. The fight was reportedly over a woman believed to be Mwanjali’s girlfriend. The former Hwange and Mamelodi Sundowns’ defender is accused of stabbing a rival twice in the belly. The victim is said to have undergone successful surgery and his life is reportedly out of danger.
In a statement posted on the official Caps United website yesterday, the board member for marketing and public relations, and former star winger Alois Bunjira said while the club regretted the nasty incident, it was calling on its members and supporters to be cautious and to exercise extreme patience.
“There has been media and social media speculation, conjecture regarding the incident at Long Chen Plaza involving our players, captain Method Mwanjali and Archford Gutu. We’ve heard various versions of the incident; we can neither confirm nor deny any version of the incident,” said Bunjira.
“We confirm, however, that the duo is assisting police with investigations and until the due process of the law is complete, we can’t comment on what may or may not have happened. We urge for extreme caution and patience as the law takes its course and avoid a trial of the duo in the court of public opinion.
“We must be categoric that the incident is regrettable; that we don’t condone any form of reckless and/or violent behaviour regardless of the circumstances. We wish the injured persons a speedy recovery. We at Caps United value life and lawful conduct in the resolution of disputes; we stand guided by the due process of the law,” Bunjira wrote.
Mwanjali and Gutu are expected to appear in court today.
