WANTED: TWO GUNMEN…Akbay loses patience with strikers

Sikhumbuzo Moyo Senior Sports Reporter
HIGHLANDERS coach Erol Akbay seems to be losing patience with his misfiring strikers and yesterday held a crisis meeting with the club’s vice-chairman where he asked for two strikers.

Bosso vice-chairman Modern Ngwenya confirmed holding a meeting with the Dutchman, but declined to divulge the details of their discussions.

“Yes, I met him,” was all Ngwenya said when asked about the meeting.

Akbay said he was tired of telling the world that his boys played well even after losing a match.

Bosso have lost by identical 1-2 score lines in league and cup matches against FC Platinum at Barbourfields Stadium and Chicken Inn in the final of the Independence Cup at the National Sports Stadium.

On both occasions, Bosso’s goal came from the versatile and hardworking Bruce Kangwa, who is enjoying a rich vein of form ever since Akbay switched him from the left-back position into attack.

“We play good football (but), the problem is scoring. If you score, then everything is easy.

‘‘I need two good strikers; our style of play is good, but we need to score and I’ve since told the technical team that I cannot continue defending this problem anymore,” said Akbay.

He said the media could report glowingly about the team’s good performances, but as long as there is no result to support that, it will always be difficult to believe that notion.

“The media will write that we got too many chances, but without any goals, how can we continue saying we’re good? I need a positive result, not just good football. This is why I need two good strikers, but I don’t know whether the club will agree to that,” Akbay said.

He, however, did not say whether the strikers will be sought locally or abroad, but indications are that Highlanders might have Dutch nationals in the squad for the first time in its 90-year history.
