Paul Mundandi in Zvishavane
NEPHIEL Rugara, the chairman of former Premiership club Shabanie Mine FC, has died. He was 55. Rugara collapsed at half-time during a Zifa Central Soccer League derby involving rivals Shabanie Mine and FC Platinum Under-19 at Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane on Sunday. “We can confirm that our brother died at Shabanie Mine Hospital yesterday (Sunday). We hear he collapsed in the VIP area,” said family spokesperson Jennifer Rugara.
“We’re, however, unhappy that his death was broadcast by a local radio station before his wife, children or relatives had been informed. We urge reporters to be ethical”.
Social media was awash with news of Rugara’s collapse and subsequent death soon after Shabanie Mine’s Erea Phiri failed to convert a penalty in the match against FC Platinum Under-19. Rugara was first appointed Shabanie Mine team manager in 2008 and helped them win promotion to the Premiership.
He became chairman in 2013 up to the time of his death.
Rugara joined Shabanie Mine 35 years ago as an engineer and rose through the ranks to become general manager of the ailing company.
Condolence messages poured in for Rugara yesterday, with the Zifa Central Region expressing shock and sadness at the death of Rugara.
“The beautiful game has lost a hero and he will be painfully missed. Zifa Central Region and the entire football family joins the Rugara family during this difficult time. May the family also find comfort in the Lord,” said the Central Region in a statement.
Zifa president Philip Chiyangwa also expressed shock at the death of Rugara.
“We’ve learnt with great shock and dismay at the death of Rugara, one of the finest football administrators in the country. He had a blistering and fulfilling career as a versatile football administrator and Shabanie Mine FC chairman,” Chiyangwa said in a statement on the association’s website.
Chiyangwa recounted Rugara’s remarkable contribution to the growth and development of football in Zimbabwe.
“He had outstanding abilities and qualities that came through hard work and had undivided love and commitment for the beautiful game.
“He was one of the most respected sports administrators in Zimbabwe. Zifa is in mourning with his family, Shabanie Mine FC, friends and the local football family as everyone grapples with the shocking loss.”
Rugara’s death came a few days after ZRP Morris defender Nyasha Chakanyuka collapsed and died on the pitch during training last week.
Mourners are gathered at number 1 Saphire Lane, Chinda Heights, Zvishavane. Rugara is survived by wife Shamiso and six children.
