Border Strikers 0-1 Hwange
BORDER Strikers continued to sing the blues when they put on yet another poor show to lose to traditionally bad travellers Hwange at Maglas Stadium here yesterday.
A strike by former Shabanie Mine defender Pervington Zimunya in the 53rd minute was all Hwange needed to collect maximum points. Zimunya had been introduced for the injured veteran Gilbert Zulu in the 37th minute. It was Hwange’s first victory away from home this season.
Gift Mbwete won possession of the ball and sent a defence-splitting pass that Zimunya fully took advantage of by meeting it with a screamer that goalkeeper Future Sibanda only managed to retrieve from the back of the nets.
The match was a big yawn and fans that chose to stay at home actually did themselves a favour.
Hwange were pumping long balls upfront as they tried to deny Border Strikers from playing their passing game.
Livingstone Genti and Tambwe Kalunga were the only players that looked hungry for Border Strikers as the rest looked content with just knocking the ball around or playing back to the goalkeeper.
Hwange coach Mabelo Njekwa was happy that his team finally won away from home.
“Border Strikers were playing at home and they had the advantage. We didn’t play our normal game as we chose to pump the long balls forward as we didn’t want them to play their passing game. I’m happy that we managed to get maximum points for the first time away from home and I’m happy about my boys’ performance,” said Njekwa.
His Border Strikers’ counterpart Saul Chaminuka was a worried man.
“We had no firepower. The Hwange goalkeeper was only tested once. We’re not convincing, but I’m working on it. I hope one day we’ll score goals and win. We’re one team that has conceded the lowest number of goals and that shows we’re doing something. I’m not going to walk away, but I’m going to work hard and correct the major problem that’s scoring,” Chaminuka said.
