THE National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) in Bulawayo and Matabeleland South provinces have released their 2016 ball games calendars ahead of the national finals that will be staged in Marondera next month.

Seven disciplines will be on offer as the provinces select their respective squads for the national event.

Naph Bulawayo chairman Bongani Sibanda said their provincial finals, featuring all five districts, would be held at Northlea High School on July 8, while tennis games will be played earlier on June 15 at Bulawayo Athletic Club.

“We realised that we don’t have enough training facilities and time in the city, hence the decision to have our tennis competitions played much earlier so as to allow our athletes more time to prepare for the national finals,” said Sibanda.

He said they were hoping to assemble a strong squad that can hold its own in Marondera at the national finals set to run from July 19-22.

In 2015, the Bulawayo netball team won silver after losing to Manicaland in the final, while their girls’ football team also emerged second to Harare.

The boys’ basketball team was the only one to win gold last year.

Naph Matabeleland South chairman Elton Sinyosi said they would group in Gwanda for the provincial finals from July 6-9, while a number of districts in the province have indicated that they would hold their district finals on July 1.

They will compete in netball, basketball, rugby, tennis, volleyball and soccer. Rugby was introduced last year.

The ball games will be sponsored by Naph and are seemingly the only real competition the provinces will have this term following the withdrawal of traditional football sponsors Ingwebu Breweries.
