NATIONAL Football Association of Zimbabwe (Nafaz) referees committee chairperson Peter Dube should not have taken up the post as he is likely to find himself compromised in the application of his duties.
Dube is the Highlanders and Premier Soccer League chairman and is now directly involved in a specialist committee, whose duties also include appointment of referees for matches.
Former PSL chief executive officer Chris Sambo said Dube, a former referee, should have declined to head the committee.
“There will be issues to do with conflict of interest since he is in charge of Highlanders, which is affiliated to the league. Issues to do with fairness will come into play here and referees will also find themselves in a tight corner whenever they take charge of Highlanders matches,” said Sambo.
He said Dube can head any other committee not the referees’ because of its technicality and specialist position.
“This will come back to haunt Dube. Very soon, clubs will start complaining of favouritism because for starters, we know referees can make mistakes, but if that mistake is in favour of Highlanders, all hell will break loose. The club itself might also suffer as a result. Highlanders are playing well at the moment and credit should go to the technical team without undertones of being favoured by referees. I honestly feel Dube should have recused himself in that regard,” said Sambo.
