HIGHLANDERS will take on Harare City in the 2016 edition of the ZNA Commanders’ Charities final at Barbourfields Stadium during the mid-season break on July 24.
Winners of the final will pocket $12,000 and the losing finalists $8,000, according to the head of army charities Lieutenant-Colonel Fabian Chitungo.
Premier Soccer League communications and media liaison officer Kudzai Bare said the league would take a break from July 18 and resume on July 30.
“The Castle Lager PSL would like to inform the football stakeholders that it will take a mid-season break from Monday 18 July to Friday 29 July 2016. Matchday 16 round of matches will resume on Saturday 30 July 2016. The ZNA Charities Shield final between Highlanders and Harare City will be played on Sunday the 24th of July 2016 at Barbourfields Stadium,” said Bare in a statement.
Holders Highlanders booked their place in the final by beating Chicken Inn and FC Platinum.
Harare City brushed aside challenges from Caps United and ZPC Kariba to book a date with Highlanders.
The tournament is set to involve all the 16 Premiership teams from next season, with senior army commanders saying they want it to have a national outlook.
The ZNA has five charities, which include the Tsanga Lodge Convalescent Centre in Nyanga for the rehabilitation of injured members of the uniformed forces. The ZNA Benevolence Fund is for the welfare of troops on internal, external and international operations.
It also runs a schools’ welfare trust for its five secondary and 12 primary schools. The Widows and Orphans charity takes care of widows and widowers of soldiers before they receive terminal benefits.
Besides the football matches, the army also has a golf tournament as part of its fundraising activities.
