THE Chevrons arrived in Bulawayo yesterday morning for the limited overs’ series against Afghanistan that starts at Queens Sports Club tomorrow.
The national cricket side were brimming with confidence following a rare morale-boosting one-day international series win against Ireland in Harare.

Coach Dav Whatmore expressed confidence that his players will put on a good display against the Afghan minnows.

“Personally I’m happy that we’re here in Bulawayo and I think everyone in the team is also happy with the change of scenery. Hopefully the guys will be keen to strut in a different environment,” said Whatmore.

“I’m extremely hopeful that the lads will continue with the great form and desire that they’ve shown in the last few games. The chances of doing well become better if everyone is on the same page. We want to continue playing well, but in cricket, anything can happen although we will do our best.”

The Chevrons come to Bulawayo on the back of a 2-1 series win over Ireland at Harare Sports Club.

Whatmore will be hoping his charges carry the same attitude that saw them winning their first two matches against the Irish.

In the opening game, Zimbabwe successfully chased Ireland’s total of 219-8 courtesy of half-centuries by Craig Ervine and Raza-Butt. However, it was Raza’s busy 60 that took Zimbabwe home.

An unbeaten century by Craig Ervine guided Zimbabwe to the series win over Ireland in the second ODI. Ervine batted for more than 40 overs in boiling temperatures to set up Zimbabwe’s five-wicket win with nine balls to spare.

He shared a 98-run third wicket partnership with Sean Williams that laid the foundation for Zimbabwe’s victory.

Ervine picked gaps and smashed the odd boundary to end the match unbeaten on 101.

Queens Sports Club has traditionally been a batsman’s paradise although conditions can also have a bit of assistance for fast bowlers with the new or old ball. Spinners too can enjoy the conditions.
