ZIMBABWE National Army (ZNA) commander Lieutenant-General Philip Valerio Sibanda has said their sporting events are aimed at uplifting disadvantaged groups in society.

Speaking in Victoria Falls at the close of the 12th Commander ZNA Executive Interactive Initiative Fun Shoot and Golf Tournament of which he is patron, Sibanda said they were donating $2 000 to Chinotimba Old People’s Home in Victoria Falls as part their social responsibility and initiative to interact with communities.

“We are grateful to the corporate world for supporting the army in its sporting activities. These events are meant to foster military relations with civilians in communities as well as fundraise for other projects as we support disadvantaged sections of society,” said Sibanda.

“I want to appreciate the organisers of this event as well as thank the corporate world for its support despite economic hardships as evidenced by the growth of the ZNA Executive Interactive Initiative. It is my wish that we continue working together so as to strengthen relations between the army and communities.”

The fun shoot was held on Friday at Hwange’s 1.2 Infantry Battalion where about 300 participants drawn from the ZNA, defence attachés from Botswana and DRC, and civilians took part, while 75 participated at the golf tournament at Elephant Hills Hotel Golf Course in Victoria Falls on Saturday.

The annual ZNA Executive Interactive Initiative is a platform for interaction between the army chief, senior ZNA officers and the business community to mingle and mix and share ideas in a relaxed sporting environment.

Next year’s Commander ZNA Executive Interactive Initiative event will be held in Nyanga.

Some of the fun shoot activities were AK-47 100M, AK-47 individual, PKM Team Shoot and the Falling Plates, figure 11, pistol 15Ms and AK47 final top.

The ZNA also sponsors the ZNA Charity Shied for Premier Soccer League clubs.
