BULAWAYO boxing fans were treated to 12 exciting bouts in a Bulawayo Amateur Boxing Association (Baba) tournament held at Mathonisa Beer Garden in Mpopoma on Saturday. Boxers from Nketa, Lobengula, Sikhulile, Bulawayo West, Headquarters 1 Brigade, Gweru and Gwanda fought in various weight divisions.
Baba vice-chairman Ezwell Ndlovu said the tournament was a great opportunity for clubs to prepare for future bouts.
“We had a great tournament as boxing fans came in their numbers to watch some of Bulawayo’s top boxers in action. Gweru and Gwanda also sent their boxers, which made the tournament even more interesting as boxers had a chance to test themselves against pugilists from other towns.
I just hope all the participants took this opportunity to prepare for other competitions and to stay in shape,” said Ndlovu. In the lightweight division, Takawira Mutonga from Nketa beat Kelvin Mukandabvute of Gweru on points.
Another Nketa boxer, Zibusiso Nyoni, also won on points against Lobengula’s Divine Jiyani. Bulawayo West’s Future Moyo beat Michael Shoko from Lobengula on points.
In the welterweight category, Anesu Mutumbane from Nketa knocked out Sikhulile’s Gift Tapela, while Marko Sibanda from HQ1 won on points against Freedom Dube of Bulawayo West. Bongani Ndlovu from Nketa beat Lobengula’s Joseph Phiri on points.
