Van Persie’s volley voted best Premier League goal

Former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie’s stunning volley against Aston Villa in April 2013 has been voted the best goal of the Premier League era.

Van Persie took the accolade after a vote among players who had scored more than 100 goals in the division.

He received an award at a Legends of Football event in London which celebrated 25 seasons of Premier League football and raised money for charity.

Van Persie’s goal, smashed home from a Wayne Rooney pass as United secured their 20th league title that night, was the second of a first-half hat trick.

“It’s a huge honour,” he said. “It’s the hardest league in the world.

“On a goal like that, you don’t really think about it. You just want to make the most of it and see what happens. But you need a bit of luck as well.

“It was the first title I won and it was a huge moment for Manchester United. What I like about that goal is the whole story that was behind it.”

Meanwhile, Ander Herrera has said he has the attributes to bring out the best in Manchester United’s world-record signing Paul Pogba.

Herrera (27) has started United’s last two Premier League games with Pogba and Jesse Lingard ahead of him in a midfield trio.

And he is happy to play the holding role in front of the back four in order to allow Pogba to benefit further forward.

“It is going well,” Herrera told Goal. “I also have a great example in that position in Michael Carrick, because he has been one of the best players in the last decade, and I think I can learn a lot from him.

“But Paul is a very strong, very physical player who shoots with both feet. He can dribble, he can defend . . . he has it all. I can then stay back to steal the ball, to keep the position, and from there initiate attacks. I’m fine, and I’ll try to provide everything that the manager asks of me.

“With Mourinho I have also played in attacking positions in the EFL Cup and even scored a goal. I am a team player and I will do whatever he asks of me, but I’m very happy ahead of the defensive line.

“But now I think I have some consistency. I know I have to keep working to earn Mourinho’s confidence even more, but it is true that I feel good in the new position and it’s also true that maybe that little change of position was what has allowed me to receive a Spain call-up.”— ESPNFC.
