HWANGE striker Gift Mbweti is confident of finishing as the Castle Lager Premiership’s top goal scorer at the end of the season.

Mbweti said this at the Colliery Stadium on Tuesday after being handed his award as Player of the Month for July by the league and sponsors’ representatives in Hwange.

Mbweti has nine goals and trails top scorer Leonard Tsipa of Caps United, who has banged in 10.

Delta Beverages sales representative for Hwange Joel Msindo and PSL chief cashier Milton Gorerino presented the award to Mbweti.

“I am optimistic that come end of season, I will be the top goal scorer. I am itching for the Harare City game at home this weekend so that I can keep pace with the current top scorer Leonard Tsipa from Caps United,” said Mbweti.

“I think I have somehow over achieved in my first year in the big league and the bonus of this hard work will be to top the scorers’ chart. I know games are now very tough as the league has reached the climax, but I will put extra effort to keep hitting the back of the net.”

Asked if the suspension of Tsipa this weekend for accumulating three yellow cards was a perfect opportunity for him to catch up or even eclipse the veteran’s goal tally, Mbweti said: “That is not important as he is a very good striker who can score a number of goals in a single game. What is crucial is that I keep focused and not worry about how others are faring, whether we are in the same race for the golden boot or not. Of course, it’s a slight advantage to me, but at the end of the day I have respect for Tsipa as he has seen it all in the game and I have a lot to learn from players like him.”

Mbweti’s coach, Mebelo Njekwa, also tipped the youngster to go all the way to the winners’ podium.
