GWERU PSL side Chapungu United yesterday officially unveiled former Shabanie Mine coach Tendai Chikuni as their head coach on a three-year contract.
Chikuni was unveiled at Thornhill Airbase in Gweru at a ceremony attended by senior Air Force of Zimbabwe officials, club management, sponsors, players and supporters.
He takes over from John Nyikadzino, who resigned at the end of the 2016 season after guiding the team to 13th position.
Chapungu chairman Fungai Makuyana said the club had hired Chikuni because they believed in his philosophy, which they hope will prosper the club in 2017.
“We settled for Chikuni because his oral presentation during the interviews was well articulated and his football philosophy was in tandem with that of Chapungu. We have no doubt that good times are ahead with his guidance as head coach,” said Makuyana.
He also unveiled the rest of the technical team that will work with Chikuni, which has Clement Mugari as assistant coach, while former goalkeeper Joram Muchambo bounces back as goalkeepers’ coach.
Other members of the technical department include Elvis Shumba (welfare manager) and Clever Remigio (team manager).
Chikuni said his immediate task was to ensure the club reclaims its former glory and his main objective was top eight finish in his first season.
“I accepted this job knowing full well what is expected at the club.
“Chapungu has a rich history and I feel that I can be part of the history. My immediate task is to ensure that I build a strong team which can finish in the top eight next season,” said Chikuni.
“Going forward I also want to win trophies at the club because it is financially stable and it is easy to motivate the boys.”
