ZIMBABWE’s Virginia “Ginny” Ross was on Saturday elected co-vice-president of the Africa Hockey Federation at an elective congress held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Ross is a former AfHF executive member and she beat South Africa’s Sheila Brown to share the vice-presidency with Nii Kumar of Ghana. Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) secretary-general Sarah Bennett lost out on the executive member’s position to Ediga Abgo of Nigeria, Kenya’s Shiraz Yakub and Doshi Doshi of Tanzania.

The new AfHF board led by Seif Ahmed of Egypt will be in office for four years. HAZ president Humphrey Chigwedere said they are elated to have a representative on the continental board.

“As HAZ, we would like to congratulate Ross on her election as vice-president of the Africa Hockey Federation at the congress held in Johannesburg.

“I believe her elevation is testimony to the good work our administrators have been doing in as far as developing the sport is concerned.

“We are confident that Ross will selflessly serve the sport and contribute to the development of hockey, not only in Zimbabwe, but also the continent,” said Chigwedere.

He said Zimbabwe also received the 2015 development award from AfHF.

He said HAZ will continue implementing their developmental programmes, starting from schools to clubs.

“Our schools have a vibrant league and the challenge we have is to get these youngsters to graduate into the club system after school.

“If we manage to get the talented crop of players coming out of school into the clubs, then we stand a better chance of doing well in international competitions,” Chigwedere said.
