TENNIS Zimbabwe (TZ) has named a 12-member team to take part in the regional zonal championships to be held in Pretoria, South Africa, next year.
The championships will run from January 9 to 17 and will also involve Angola, Botswana, DRC, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Zambia.
TZ secretary-general Cliff Nhokwara said the players will not be going into camp, but they will work with their individual coaches until they leave for South Africa.
“Camping ahead of the tournament will not be necessary but we are saying the players need to practise and play matches to keep in shape wherever they are,” said Nhokwara.
“They will only be under the tutelage of the national team coach when they leave for the championships since they are drawn from different parts of the country.”
Nhokwara expressed confidence that the young players will acquit themselves well at the tournament where the country has traditional done relatively well.
Meanwhile, a national junior tournament is on the cards in Harare from January 6-9 where more than 100 players are expected to take part in the first local tournament of 2016.
