THE country’s volleyball coaches are mulling to form an association under the auspices of the Coaches Commission to protect and promote their interests. The coaches held a meeting in Gweru at the weekend where they agreed that a database of all coaches in Zimbabwe be drawn up ahead of a February 27 meeting where a steering committee will be set up.

Chairperson of the Coaches Commission Vulindlela Moyo said compilation of the coaches’ register in all provinces would culminate in the formation of an association, whose proposed name is Zimbabwe Volleyball Coaches Association.

“We want to come up with a database of coaches and then group them according to their qualifications. The coaches also resolved that all those that have been through coaching clinics use their qualifications for the development of the game. We have had instances where some attend coaching clinics only to use the certificates to gain promotions and not for coaching. The association will look at those issues,” said Moyo.

Once the association is in place, Moyo said, there will be revision of some courses as well as the classification of coaches.

“Once this is in place, we are going to rebrand and do some revision of coaching courses on offer, progression stages in coaching qualifications, production of new manuals and integration of life skills and anti-doping topics into the manuals. There will also be a code of conduct for the coaches.”

Moyo said they would also put measures in place to ensure that every club, school and tertiary institution has a qualified volleyball coach.
