SPORT-STARVED Victoria Falls is set to host a rare boxing tournament at a local hotel this evening, courtesy of the resort town’s renowned fitness trainer Prosper Mazorodze. Mazorodze, who holds sports science qualifications obtained in Malaysia and Singapore, recently established Trojan Boxing Promotions to support the town’s amateur boxers.
Ten bouts have been lined up for the inaugural boxing tournament and Mazorodze said his vision was to develop the sport in Victoria Falls by identifying and nurturing young boxers.
“I realised that there was no activity in Victoria Falls in terms of sport and thought of opening a boxing stable. The whole idea is to try and get youths off the streets and nurture them into professional boxers,” said Mazorodze.
He said today’s event was largely aimed at fundraising to buy essential equipment for his new boxing stable.
“Most potential boxers have only gone as far as amateur level here because there was no place for them to train,” he said.
The tourney will start at 6PM and end at around midnight. The participating pugilists are largely from the resort town.
The Trojan stable, which is training 10 amateur boxers, have engaged former boxer Chivasa Magare as their trainer and Walter Ndlovu is the technical director assisted by Tobias Owen Muposiwa.
Mazorodze said his long term plan was to establish a boxing academy and would soon seek government support.
