ZIFA Southern Region has named a 60-member legends provisional squad that will represent the region in matches against their Northern and Central region counterparts to select a Zimbabwe Legends team that will face the Rest of Africa Legends on February 26 at the National Sports Stadium.
The Zimbabwe Legends and Rest of Africa Legends game is being sponsored by a local sports consultancy ICA Sports Consultancy to the tune of $120,000.
The preliminary games will be played on a round robin format every weekend from February 7-21.
Southern Region Legends’ coach Barry Daka said he would settle for those that are not attached to any Premier Soccer League clubs as players.
“We have announced our squad and all the named players are above 35 years. We welcome this tournament because it will help us showcase what we have to the younger generation because we have noticed that they lack that technical and tactical prowess that we used to possess during our time,” said Daka.
He also urged all former players to embark on community work by volunteering to assist youngsters with their game.
“I urge all legends that are not occupied in any way to volunteer their services in schools by coaching youngsters because we are really losing the battle in grassroots development,” he said.
Daka said all selected legends must converge at the Zifa Southern Region offices tomorrow at 5PM to confirm their availability.
