MIDLANDS Pool League (MPL) clubs asserted their dominance by relegating teams from the splinter Midlands Pool Legends to the reserve league in a tournament held at a Gweru night club at the weekend.
MPL chairman Vandirai Hove said the tournament was the first step towards reunification of the two leagues.
“We want to thank our counterparts from the Midlands Pool Legends for accepting our invitation. This is the first stage towards reunification of the league and we want to encourage our counterparts to keep up the good sporting spirit as we want pool to be the winner at the end of the day,” said Hove.
Uptown won all their matches to clinch the tournament and pocket the $100 prize money, while defending champions Kudzanayi came a close second and went home with $70. Senga were third, MSU (fourth) and MN Gunners (fifth).
Clubs from the Midlands Legends League all took the last five spots, with Mboma on fifth and Old Mkoba anchoring the tournament after failing to win a single game.
The MPL split into two leagues in 2015 following elections that ushered in Hove, as the league’s disgruntled former chairman Edward Ganyani formed a splinter league, taking almost half of the clubs with him. This also resulted in the suspension of the Division One league as clubs joined the splinter league.
