Prince Ali hints he’ll stand for Fifa presidency again

MANCHESTER, England — Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan, beaten in May’s Fifa presidential election by Sepp Blatter, strongly hinted he will stand for the position again while speaking to delegates at the Soccerex business convention yesterday.

Ali, 39, lost by 133-73 votes to incumbent Blatter who then announced he was standing down from the position four days later after Fifa was plunged into its worst crisis following arrests of its officials and others two days before the election.

A fresh presidential election to find a successor to Blatter will be held in February and Ali looks set to become the third major candidate to enter after declarations from Uefa President Michel Platini of France and former Fifa executive committee member and Asian vice-president Chung Mong-joon of South Korea.

Asked by moderator David Davies if he was a candidate for the presidency of Fifa again, Ali replied: “I’m talking to national associations, listening to their opinions and what they see for the future and giving my own ideas.

“Right now we need a candidate who’s forward thinking and will bring new ideas who isn’t tainted by the past as well. So what I’ll say right now is ‘stay tuned’”

He then expanded on his theme throughout a relaxed 30 minute interview when he stressed time and again the need for a new, transparent Fifa, open to change and widespread reform.

And he said that neither Platini, who supported him in May’s election, or Chung, who lost his executive committee seat as Asian vice-president when Ali beat him in an election in 2011, were ideal future candidates for the Fifa presidency. — Reuters.

Zifa okay with Nhamoinesu headgear

ZIFA have allayed fears that Poland-based defender Costa Nhamoinesu’s head sweatband with a Nike logo could bring the national association into collision with their technical sponsors Joma.

The former AmaZulu and Masvingo United strongman wore the head gear during the Warriors’ African Cup of Nations Group L qualifier against Guinea at Rufaro Stadium that ended in a share of the spoils.

“Head gear and soccer boots are not part of the package. The deal is for clothing regalia and as you know some of these players have personal endorsements with some corporates,” said Zifa communications manager Xolisani Gwesela.

There were fears that the Spain-based Joma’s contract could have been breached by the big defender, who plays for Sparta Praha in Poland. Corporate wars are usually messy as was the case in the high profile fall out between former Brazilian star Ronaldinho and soft drink giant Coca-Cola in 2012.

Ronaldinho, who had a $750,000 a year sponsorship deal with Coca-Cola, saw the deal being abruptly terminated after the two-time Fifa World Player of the Year appeared at a Press conference with two cans of Pepsi, who are fierce Coca-Cola competitors.

Ronaldinho reportedly took a sip from one of the cans during the question and answer session for his new club Atletico Mineiro, which was being sponsored by Pepsi.

Meanwhile, Gwesela yesterday refused to comment on the failure by Zifa president Cuthbert Dube to attend the senior national team’s match against Guinea.

Dube, who has never attended the Warriors’ matches since coming into office in March 2010 save for the high profile friendly match against Brazil in June of the same year, has now missed a record 48 national team games.

No reasons have been given for his strange decision not to attend his association’s flagship team’s matches.

“I’ll not comment on that,” said Gwesela, when quizzed why his boss continues to snub national team games.

2016 Under-20 Rugby World Cup set for Zim

Paul Munyuki Harare Bureau
THE Zimbabwe Rugby Union have won the right to host the 2016 Under-20 Junior World Rugby Trophy tournament, four months after they made an application to World Rugby becoming only the second African country to do so in the history of the competition.

Kenya are the only African country to have hosted the tournament when they staged the 2009 event. But after putting up a strong bid Zimbabwe will now have their chance to stage the competition, throwing a huge lifeline to the Sables who last week had failed to qualify for the tournament.

ZRU president John Falkenberg broke the news in a statement yesterday.

“I am very pleased to announce that the 2nd tier (junior) World Rugby Trophy will be held in Zimbabwe in 2016. I thank World Rugby for their confidence in awarding the hosting rights of this prestigious tournament to our country Zimbabwe. I would like to thank all those in the union who worked hard on this bidding process namely (the) director of rugby (Brighton Chivandire) the chief executive (Colleen de Jong) and the general manager (Sifiso Made) and my vice-president (Nyararai) Sibanda,” read part of the statement. But the hosting of the event is not the only good news as the package comes with the bonus that the Zimbabwe Under-20 side has qualified by virtue of hosting despite the fact that they fell in the qualifiers to Namibia a few weeks ago.

World Rugby competitions operations manager Simon Kibble was in the country early May to assess the Zimbabwean conditions and environment and held a string of meetings with the Sport and Recreation Commission, ZRU and a number of other stakeholders and also inspected facilities likely to be used for the next edition of the games.

Kibble also visited health facilities that included Avenues Clinic, hotels and playing venues and also took time to watch schools rugby during the Dairibord Schools Festival at Prince Edward in the company of ZRU chief executive de Jong.

According to ZRU general manager Made, Kibble believes Zimbabwe has some of the best facilities, good enough to host the annual tournament.

“He was impressed with the facilities we have here he went to see the health and medical facilities we’ll be using, hotels and proposed match venues and he hinted that he was happy with what we’ve exhibited.

“The dates of the tournament are yet to be set though but once all that has gone through, we’ll know of the time the tournament will take place,” said Made.

The Zimbabwe Under-20 side has not qualified for the JWRT in the last four years, during which old enemies Namibia have dominated them. The Namibians were also part of this year’s edition of the tournament in Portugal. Zimbabwe will enjoy the privilege of playing at the tournament as hosts after they failed to qualify on the field of play, an extra-time 34-32 defeat at the hands of Namibia ending their hopes.

The two sides had been tied 27-27 at the end of regulation time. Other countries that have previously staged the tournament are Russia in 2010, Georgia in 2011 with the United States of America taking care of the 2012 edition. Last year the event was hosted by Japan while Chile took charge of the 2013 edition.

Made believes that Zimbabwe has the capacity to host the global tournament as they have hosted the Junior Africa Cup thrice in the last five years.

“We’ve hosted the Junior Africa Cup twice before, we’re hosting it again this year and this gives us enough reason to believe that we’re capable of hosting the JWRT. The fact that we’ve applied to host the tournament means we’ve the capacity to do so.

“We know we can do better than other countries that have hosted the event before so at the moment we just have to wait for deliberations at World Rugby level and I’m sure after this year’s JWRT in Portugal we’ll know of our position,” added the former Harare Province chairman.

Ivorians held as other former champions win

YAYA TOURE IVORY COASTCAPE TOWN — Holders Cote d’Ivoire were held to a draw in their first match under new management in Sunday’s African Nations Cup qualifiers but former champions Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt and Zambia all won potentially difficult away games.

There was victory on the road for the Cape Verde Islands, surprise package of the last two tournaments, and rare successes for the Central African Republic and Mauritius.

A weakened Cote d’Ivoire, without captain Yaya Toure, Wilfried Bony and Max Gradel, played out a 0-0 draw with Sierra Leone in their first match under new coach Michel Dussuyer.

The Group I qualifier had been moved to Port Harcourt in Nigeria because Ebola-affected Sierra Leone are banned from hosting any international football.

Two goals in the last three minutes from El Arabi Soudani delivered a 3-1 win for Algeria away to Lesotho and a second successive victory in Group J.

Cameroon’s Vincent Aboubaker scored a 65th minute winner away to the Gambia to add to the last minute goal he netted in the 1-0 victory over Mauritania at the start of Group M in June.

The win keeps Cameroon ahead in the standings after main rivals South Africa slumped to an embarrassing 3-1 defeat in Mauritania.

Egypt, who have missed out on the last three finals, went ahead after two minutes in N’djamena and with Bassem Morsi completing his hat-trick won 5-1 against hosts Chad.

Zambia’s podgy striker Collins Mbesuma, enjoying a surprise recall, scored the winner as the 2012 Nations Cup winners came from behind to beat Kenya 2-1 in Nairobi.

Cape Verde’s Ryan Mendes, who last week moved to English second-tier club Nottingham Forest, netted six minutes into stoppage time as they beat Libya 2-1 in a match played in Cairo because of the unstable security situation in the hosts’ country.

Civil war in the Central African Republic prevented them hosting qualifiers in the last World Cup preliminaries but a first game back in Bangui saw a surprise 2-0 victory over fancied neighbours Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mauritius scored a rare international success as Fabien Pithia’s second-half goal saw them home over Mozambique.

The next set of qualifiers for the 2017 Nations Cup finals will be played in March. African teams now turn their attention to next month’s start of the qualification campaign for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. — Reuters.

Serena, Venus to meet in US Open quarter-final

VENUS AND SERENANew York — Serena and Venus Williams advanced to a dramatic US Open quarter-final showdown with straight-set triumphs on Sunday while Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard withdrew from her fourth-round match due to a concussion.

World number one Serena Williams served well in moving within three match victories of a rare calendar Grand Slam with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over US 19th seed Madison Keys.

Serena made only six unforced errors to 19 for Keys and hit 58 percent of her first serves. She took 79 percent of those points and 70 percent on her second serves, nearly twice Keys’ second-try effectiveness.

“I’m so proud. I’m so glad it’s so much better,” Serena said of her serve. “My only chance was to start out fast. I just stayed in there and was able to relax.” Venus, seeded 23rd, downed 152nd-ranked Estonian teen qualifier Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, matching her deepest Grand Slam run since reaching the 2010 US Open semi-finals.

“We’re both prepared,” Venus said. “Even though you’re playing your sister you’ve to be prepared and focus. The preparation doesn’t change.”

Serena, who holds all four major tennis titles, is trying to complete the first calendar Grand Slam since Steffi Graf in 1988 and match Graf’s Open Era record of 22 career Slam singles titles by capturing her Open Era record seventh US Open crown.

But Venus, two years older than Serena at 35, could play the spoiler as she tries to add to a trophy collection that includes the 2000 and 2001 US Opens and five Wimbledon titles, the most recent in 2008.

“I don’t think anyone wants to be a spoiler. I think people love to see history being made,” Venus said.

“But at the same time, you’re focused on winning your match even though the circumstances are really much different than you.”

Bouchard, who suffered a head injury after slipping in the locker room late Friday, pulled out of her match against Italy’s Roberta Vinci with what US Open tournament director David Brewer said was a concussion.

Bouchard had pulled out of mixed and women’s doubles on Saturday.

The 21-year-old from Montreal was a French and Australian Open semi-finalist last year and lost the 2014 Wimbledon final to Petra Kvitova.

Her head injury adds to a season of setbacks, including first-round French Open and Wimbledon exits and a 12-17 record.

Vinci advanced by walkover to her third US Open quarter-final in four years to match her deepest Grand Slam run.

She next faces the winner of a later match between Russian 13th seed Ekaterina Makarova and France’s Kristina Mladenovic.

Serena leads the Williams sibling rivalry 15-11 but they have split four US Open meetings, including the 2001 and 2002 finals.

Serena won their most recent matchup in the fourth round at Wimbledon in July.

“Awesome. It’s been awesome,” Venus said when asked about her sibling rivalry.

“I’m so proud of Serena and I think she’s proud of me. We inspire each other.”

Serena won her first set in 27 minutes, Keys handing her the lone break in the sixth game.

Serena hit a backhand winner to break Keys for a 4-3 edge in the second set and broke again on match point when Keys, who also lost to Serena in the Australian Open semi-finals, double faulted to end matters after 68 minutes and ensure an all-Williams showdown.

Venus, who lost the 1997 US Open final to Martina Hingis when Kontaveit was 21 months old, broke in the fourth game and again in the eighth, Kontaveit hitting a forehand long to drop the set after 24 minutes.

Kontaveit, who lost in the first round at the past two Wimbledons in her only prior Grand Slam appearances, swatted a forehand beyond the baseline to give Venus a 2-0 lead in the second set and sent a backhand long to surrender a break for a 4-0 deficit.

Williams held twice more, denying the European’s lone break point in the final game to win in 50 minutes.

“Experience helped a lot,” Williams said. “I was able to understand what it’s like to play in this moment more than she was.”

Kontaveit, 19, was thwarted in her bid to match the best US Open qualifier showing, American Barbara Gerken’s quarter-final run in 1981.

Even with the loss, Kontaveit will nearly double her career prize money with $213,575 for her US Open run.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic booked his place in the US Open quarter-finals with a four-set victory over Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut.— AFP.

RICHMOND MUTUMBANITHE Zimbabwe President’s XI cricket team crashed out of the Africa T20 Cup after finishing third in Pool A at Sahara Park Willowmoore in Benoni, South Africa, at the weekend.

Although they finished the tour on a winning note, an eight-wicket victory over Western Province on Sunday, the President’s XI missed out on the semi-finals scheduled for the first weekend of October.

Their opening fixture against Easterns was washed out on Saturday without a ball being bowled.

Zimbabwe made 117-8 in their allotted 20 overs in their next match against Northerns as they struggled to contend with the swinging pink ball. Only Malcolm Waller and Richmond Mutumbami offered little resistance scoring 36 runs each.

In reply, Northerns relied on the vast experience of Albie Morkel, whose unbeaten half-century made the run-chase much easier against a determined President’s XI bowling attack.

Sunday’s final fixture against Western Province was a must-win for the President’s XI. They restricted Province to 145-3 with Pieter Malan excelling with the bat on his way to an unbeaten 79, but his partners struggled for fluency.

Zimbabwe cruised 147-2 through a series of steady partnerships in the top order. Kevin Kasuza and Peter Moor put on 70 for the first wicket, Moor and Waller 37 for the second wicket and Waller and Mutumbami completed the successful chase with an unbroken 40-run third wicket partnership off three overs, with Mutumbami knocking 20 runs off seven balls.

The eight-wicket victory enabled Zimbabwe to finish tied on six points with Easterns, but the South Africans’ superior run rate saw them progressing. Northerns won the group with 10 points.

Weale accuses ZRU of neglect

THEO WEALEDingilizwe Ntuli Sports Editor
THE Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) has been blamed for the rapid decline of the game in the country through their administrative ineptitude. Theo Weale, the Matabeleland Rugby Football Board (MRFB) chairman, said the growth of the sport could only be fostered by establishing, nurturing, promoting and investing in rugby around the country, and not the lip-service paid by ZRU.

Weale, who was elected to head a new committee at a special meeting in July after the previous board was removed through a vote of no confidence, said they were not only looking for financial assistance from ZRU, but also general support for their developmental plans.

He accused ZRU of only focusing on the Harare league since the discontinuation of the National Rugby League last year, saying this was hampering efforts to revive the sport.

“ZRU have let us down. They haven’t held any coaching clinic in Bulawayo and seem only concerned about the Old Mutual schools’ rugby development.

“While there’s nothing wrong with that, ZRU need to change and also come to Bulawayo and not just focus on Harare,” said Weale.

“ZRU mustn’t neglect us. We aren’t saying they must do all the work, but saying they should do something that’ll give us something to work with since we’re starting from scratch,” he said.

Despite the non-engagement, Weale said they were working on introducing a functional Mid/Mat League, involving teams from Bulawayo, Masvingo and Midlands province.

Once they felt the league matches the thriving Harare one, Weale said they would approach ZRU to introduce inter-provincials so that the senior national rugby team becomes more representative by being selected from a wider base.

Presently, the Sables consist of Harare-based and a few foreign-based players.

“At the moment, the Sables are just a Harare select. People don’t have to migrate to Harare or play outside the country to be selected into the national team.

“Right now there’s a player migration to Harare because they realise that’s the only way they can continue playing rugby or make the national team, but we want to change all that,” Weale said.

He said Bulawayo-based clubs Old Miltonians, Matabeleland Busters, Western Panthers and Western Bulldogs have been inactive this year after the Mid/Mat League failed to take off.

Weale said they had come up with the Bulawayo Rugby Cup tournament to end the season so they can go into the new year on a high note.

The tournament should have kicked off in Masvingo on August 29 featuring eight teams, Old Miltonians, Matabeleland Busters, Western Panthers, Western Bulldogs, Gweru, Kwekwe, Kadoma and Masvingo, but failed to take off after the hosts indicated that they could not assemble a team or accommodate the participants.

Weale said despite the setback, the tournament will now start in Gweru on September 12 featuring the same eight teams before ending in Bulawayo on September 26.

“We’re trying to raise some hype so that ordinary people see that rugby isn’t dead and buried. This tournament is also meant to give us a stepping stone going forward into next year,” he said.

Old Miltonians are previous multiple national rugby champions and provided the bulk of national team players during its prime and Weale said their vision was to provide a landscape where rugby is again restored to prominence and, most importantly, youngsters leaving school don’t give up on the game.

He also revealed that the MRFB wanted to adopt Milton High and Gifford High schools as rugby centres of excellence whereby they will refurbish the game’s facilities at the two institutions and ensure that the sport is restored to its former glory.

Weale said the MRFB particularly wants to refurbish the Milton High rugby fields, but were facing challenges from the school’s authorities, whom he branded as anti-rugby.

“We want to restore the Milton High rugby fields to what they used to be.

“The rugby grounds used to be green, but have now been neglected to the extent that other schools have refused to play at Milton because the fields are in a terrible state. But we’ll not give up because we know that Milton has a long and rich history of rugby and sport in general, so we’ll keep trying to change the image of the school,” Weale said.

PREPARATIONS for the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) track and field championships set for White City Stadium in Bulawayo on September 27 are at an advanced stage with the Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) opening the athletes’ registration process.

The event is set to mark the end of a successful NAAZ season that kicked off in February with the regional cross country championships for cadets, juniors and youths in Harare before the first track and field championships at White City.

Athletes also represented Zimbabwe at the 12th edition of the Confederation of African Athletics Junior Championships in Ethiopia in March.

In May, local athletes took part in the Southern Region Senior Championships in Mauritius before heading to Beijing, China, for the just-ended International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Senior Championships.

A total of 200 athletes from around the country are expected to take part in the event being organised by the NAAZ women’s committee in liaison with BAB.

National 100m specialist Kenneth Chibwana, who is part of the Team Zimbabwe contingent at the ongoing African Games in Congo Brazzaville, is also expected to be part of the extravaganza.

BAB chairperson Manuel Mpofu said: “As the host province, we’ve started our preparations and we can tell you that everything is in place for the event. We’ve just finished the booking for the stadium and we’re now focusing on logistical issues that include transport and accommodation for the expected athletes. We’d like to urge all athletics clubs and provinces to forward names of their athletes for affiliation so that we finish everything on time.”

Mata denies LVG,De Gea friction

THERE is no problem between goalkeeper David de Gea and Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal after his failed move to Real Madrid and midfielder Juan Mata expects his fellow Spaniard to have a fine season.

De Gea, the club’s player of the year the last two seasons, was heavily linked with a move to Real throughout the summer transfer window but a deal failed to materialise as the Spanish club ran out of time.

“I’ve talked with him a lot. There have been hectic and stressful days but he is such a quiet, centred person, nothing changes,” the 27-year-old Mata told British media.

“The last two years David has been the best player in our team. His saves have earned us a lot of points. I’ve no doubt this will be a very good year, too.

“I don’t think there’ll be a problem with the club, the coach or the fans. That’s what I perceive. The fans love him very much, he’s highly regarded by the club and the coach,” the former Chelsea playmaker added.

Table tennis coaching clinic for teachers

THE Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture will conduct a table tennis beginner’s coaching course targeted at primary and secondary school Physical Education teachers at the Drill Hall in Bulawayo on September 18.

The ministry’s sports development and promotion officer for Reigate district Mayibongwe Sibanda said the initiative was inspired by his attendance of a similar course for developing countries in China last month.

He said table tennis could be used to attract more pupils into sports as it had a lot of advantages for people living with disabilities. “It’s a unique sport that’ll see many pupils from all walks of life take part in and it’ll develop competitive athletes,” said Sibanda.

“We’re also trying to introduce this sport into schools because it’s unique and uncommon.

“It’s easy to learn and helps improve reflexes, mental alertness and speed, balances one and reduces chances of falling and is also an indoor sport that can’t be affected by the weather.”

He added that the ministry was looking at introducing more sporting disciplines considered uncommon in schools as a way of giving pupils a wider choice.

“Table tennis equipment is expensive and the coaching clinic will also look at ways of improvising such as using locally made tables, especially for schools that have woodwork as part of their practical subjects,” said Sibanda.

He said they were hoping to lure sponsors and continue promoting sport by conducting other coaching courses in communities around Bulawayo as part of their efforts to reduce youth unemployment.

INTERNATIONAL cricket returns to Bulawayo next month when Zimbabwe takes on Afghanistan in five one-day games and two Twenty20 matches at Queens Sports Club. After being starved of international matches for over a year, Afghanistan’s visit to Bulawayo will be seen as a first step towards staging more international cricket games in the City of Kings.

Afghanistan last toured Zimbabwe in July last year and they are expected to arrive in Bulawayo on October 13 for a three-week visit to play in the limited overs matches.

Matabeleland Tuskers Cricket Franchise chief executive officer Stanley Staddon said soon after Afghanistan’s departure, Bangladesh will arrive in the city on October 31 for a three-week tour.

He said Afghanistan could even arrive earlier than October 13. “From the communication that we’ve had with ZC (Zimbabwe Cricket), Afghanistan have indicated that they want to arrive early to play a couple of training matches against Tuskers. As a franchise, we’re happy that (international) cricket is finally coming to Bulawayo and it’s our hope that people of this region will come in their numbers to rally behind the boys for the Afghanistan and Bangladesh matches,” said Staddon.

Dates for the Zimbabwe and Afghanistan one-day matches are October 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24. There will be a two-day rest before the first T20 game is played on October 27 before Afghanistan winds up its visit to Bulawayo with the last T20 game two days later.

In their last visit to Zimbabwe, Afghanistan played four one-day matches, winning their two opening games by six wickets. The Asians then beat Zimbabwe by two wickets in the third game and the final encounter by 100 runs.

Bangladesh, whose bowling coach is former Zimbabwe skipper Heath Streak, are set to arrive in the city on October 31, with their first of three one-day internationals on November 3. The second ODI will be played two days later and the last on November 7.

After the ODIs, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh will battle it out in two four-day games set for November 10-13 and November 17-20.

Staddon said they were prepared for a busy international calendar that would be immediately followed by the domestic league.

“We’ve completed renovations of the dressing rooms at Queens Sports Club with these international matches in mind. A team led by ZC grounds curator Fungai Shanganya has done a beautiful job in maintaining the wickets at Queens Sports Club and BAC (Bulawayo Athletic Club), which can be used for warm-up games. There are 10 wickets, five for local matches and the other five for international games. The facility is ready for games because we never stopped working when the domestic season ended,” Staddon said.

MANGWE Rural District Council human resources officer Johnson Sibanda has donated sporting equipment worth $3,000 to Mazhou Ward in Zvishavane. Sibanda sponsored a four-team soccer and netball tournament at which he donated two football kits imported from the United Kingdom, four net balls, two soccer balls as well as a $500 cash prize for the event.

Sibanda also purchased spare parts for repairing the community borehole that had broken down leaving villagers fetching water from unprotected sources and exposing them to waterborne diseases.

Mazhou Ward won two matches and drew the other on their way to scooping the winners’ prize. Vengesai were second, Sasula third and Jonyo finished last. Mazhou also won the netball event ahead of Vengesai, Sasula and Ngazimbi.

“I work for Mangwe RDC but charity begins at home so I decided to do something for my home area. My desire is to see soccer and netball developing at grassroots level and also to cater for the rural people who have nothing to do,” said Sibanda.

“I want to see soccer developing in rural communities and also to try and help nurture young players so that rural communities can act as feeders to clubs like FC Platinum and Shabanie Mine.

“I’m doing this to complement Zim-Asset. We also want to reduce the rural to urban migration as the youths will have something to do,” he said.

Former national team and Tsholotsho forward Joel Luphahla was spotted by veteran coach Gibson Homela while playing social soccer at a growth point and he went on to ply his trade abroad.

FC Platinum utility player Raymond Sibanda was also discovered in rural Mabasa which shows that there is abundant talent in rural areas and scouts just need to cast their nets wider.

FORMER England batsman Kevin Pietersen has signed to play for the Dolphins in the South African Ram Slam T20. The 35-year-old, England’s record run-scorer across all formats, was sacked after the 5-0 defeat by Australia in the 2013-14 Ashes series.

South Africa-born Pietersen was told in May he would not be recalled. He said: “I look forward to playing good, winning cricket. Every time I come back to South Africa it feels like a homecoming.”

Pietersen will travel to South Africa in October to prepare for the Ram Slam, which runs from November 1 to December 12. Lance Klusener, coach of the Durban-based Dolphins, said it was “exciting” to have signed Pietersen.

The former South Africa international added: “He’s here to lead our batting as well as work closely with our youngsters.” Pietersen was the second top-scorer in the 2014-15 Australian Big Bash League, but pulled out of an Indian Premier League deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad to play county cricket at Surrey, in the hope of winning an international recall.

Pietersen – who briefly captained England in 2008 – has since played for St Lucia Zouks in the Caribbean Premier League, with his last appearance coming in July. — BBC Sport

Questions over Danny Phiri’s suspension

Danny Phiri

LOG leaders Chicken Inn are planning to engage the Premier Soccer League to look into the suspension of their captain Danny Phiri who is set to miss their next assignment against ZPC Kariba because of yellow cards.

Coach Joey Antipas suggested that the league could have erred when they announced yesterday that Phiri and Whawha’s Blessing Chidzero are not available for selection this week after amassing three yellow cards each. The Gamecocks are eager to maintain their spot at the top of the table and they need all their men available at this stage of the race.

Phiri put up a commendable show in the national team’s colours last Sunday when he featured as the only home-based player in the 1-1 draw against Guinea in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Rufaro. “To me it sounds a bit strange because we thought he had only two yellow cards,” said Antipas.

“I’m not sure if he has picked up all those cards as they say, so we’re going to do more enquiries with the PSL to find out if he, indeed, has three yellows.

“But I’m happy we’ll have two other players – Elvis Chipezeze and Edmore Chirambadare – coming back from the national team.

“It’s obviously going to be a difficult game because ZPC have been picking up form of late. I’m sure we’ll be ready for them. We may have to play on without Danny.”

Besides Phiri, the duo of Lawrence Mhlanga and Raphael Kutinyu will also be missed as they are away with the national Under-23 team at the Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville.

The Young Warriors lost 0-1 against Burkina Faso in their first game at the Africa Games. Chicken Inn are enjoying their place in the sun as they currently occupy the summit of the table and enjoying a four-point cushion.

The Gamecocks pulled off a big win in their last match against city rivals Highlanders when they emerged 3-2 victors at Barbourfields. And, according to PSL, Phiri was booked in the derby.

He was also carrying cards from previous matches against Dongo Sawmill at Vengere in July and against Whawha back in April.

Bale might retire at Real

baleTHE Welshman’s representative says he is happy with life in the Spanish capital and hopes his client remains there for the rest of his career Gareth Bale was never close to joining Manchester United in the transfer window and is so happy at Real Madrid that he could retire at the club, according to his agent, who also believes that he has matched Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Wales international was heavily linked to a move to Old Trafford throughout the summer, despite being a first-team star for Madrid since he joined two years ago.

However, Jonathan Barnett says both he and Bale see the 26-year-old’s long-term future as being at the Santiago Bernabeu. When asked at Soccerex if the former Tottenham player was ever likely to move to United, Barnett replied: “That was complete rubbish. Gareth Bale has never said he wants to leave Real Madrid and Madrid have always said how happy they are with him.

“Why would he want to leave? It doesn’t make sense. He was nowhere near leaving. “I’m not going to rule out a return to the Premier League, but he’s contracted to Madrid for a few more years and hopefully he’ll stay for the rest of his career.

“He loves it there and things are going well for him. I’m proud of how well we have helped him settle in there.

“It has worked very well. Everything is taken care of for him.” Barnett also believes Bale is almost at the level of Madrid talisman Ronaldo.

“I think in the next two or three years I think he’s going to be seen as the best player in the world. He wants to win the Ballon d’Or and I think he’s got a great chance.

“He’s not there to compete with Ronaldo, but in terms of what he has achieved at the club, they are almost level already. Ronaldo has been there for 10 years and Gareth has been there for two and a half.” — Goal

Zifa lose 12k

ZIMBABWE’S Warriors showed their pulling power by attracting one of the biggest crowds seen at Rufaro in recent years but the revenue from the sellout turnout still left Zifa swimming in a pool of debt with the Association reporting a loss.

According to an income and expenditure statement released by Zifa yesterday, the Group L qualifier against Guinea, which ended 1-1, attracted a paying crowd of 25,713, grossing $88,542 but still Zifa recorded a loss of $12,481.

However, others will question the attendance figures given that, clearly, there were more people at Rufaro on Sunday than the 28,000 who packed Rufaro in October 2012 for the Dynamos/Highlanders league match which grossed $168,000.

The cheapest tickets for that game were $5. Yesterday, Zifa revealed that their expenditure related to Sunday’s big match amounted to $101,023. It also emerge that a host of creditors had swamped Zifa after the game given that the Association had borrowed heavily in anticipation of the big crowd.

Zifa had to borrow to pay for the tickets of all the foreign-based players, to fly the match officials from Botswana, give them their match fees and also accommodate them as demanded by the organisers of the tournament.

Premier Soccer League chairman Twine Phiri, who is also a Zifa board member, went into the cash room soon after the game to collect the players’ bonuses and allowances, which had been promised to the Warriors on the eve of the match. Phiri last night confirmed that he had broken with tradition and went into the cash room soon after the match.

“It’s true that I went into the cash room but everyone was aware that as a Board we had agreed that we would pay the players immediately from the match revenue.

“When a meeting was held with the players, Prophet Walter Magaya had also made a guarantee to the players that in the event that the match had attracted a crowd not good enough to pay them he would pay the difference and I was tasked by both the Prophet and the Board to ensure that soon after the match we would collect the cash and pay the players.

“I had to stay on until late at the stadium while the reconciliation was being done and so my presence in that cash room was above board and it’s not like all the Zifa Board members who were at the stadium invaded the cash room to line their pockets,” Phiri said.

Reports yesterday had indicated that four Zifa Board members at the stadium paid themselves $1,000 each, in allowances accruing from last year.

Zifa communications manager Xolisani Gwesela, in confirming the loss, said the Association, which of late has had to rely on the Warriors’ home matches to make reasonable revenue, was still saddled with the debts. Gwesela said the amount generated from the gates could not do much for the cash-strapped Association which is reeling under a heavy strain of debts.

Players allowances, which included camping and appearance fees, gobbled the biggest chunk after $22,000 was set aside for the purpose while another $12,500 went towards accommodation.

The Warriors were camped at a Harare lodge but no sooner had the game ended that the senior team found themselves in fresh trouble after Zifa failed to pay for their accommodation and food and the lodge’s management threatened to lock them up. Zifa had promised to pay Daisy Lodge part of the $11,200 they owe for the Warriors camping costs stretching from the previous assignment against Malawi and the association had committed to paying from the proceeds of the match against Guinea.

But that still fell short and in the end Warriors coach, Callisto Pasuwa, was made the sacrificial lamb with the gaffer being detained as surety that Zifa would honour their pledge. According to the breakdown issued by Zifa, Harare City Council claimed $13,281 for the use of Rufaro.

Zifa also paid six percent of gross revenue in levies to the Sport and Recreation Commission while more levies were paid to CAF and FIFA which totalled $11,511 while a host of service providers also lined up to get their dues.

Some of the figures, however, will need a lot of explanation. For $11,096 was paid by Zifa to a Harare travel agent to secure tickets for the foreign-based players and referees but the figure that appears on the balance sheet provided by the Association, as funds paid for that cause is $12,500.

The ticket refund for Czech-based defender Costa Nhamoinesu was given as $1,900 when in fact the player received a part payment of $1,200. “The statement was prepared by the accounts department and we trust that they exercised due diligence with the figures. So we stand by what’s on the statement as a true reflection of the records,” said Gwesela.

“We’re grateful to fans and all partners who contributed to the success of the match.

“Zifa is humbled by fans who thronged the stadium in their large numbers and we would like to apologise for the confusion that surfaced at the entry points.

“The Premier Soccer League, Joma, Tanganda Private Limited, Herentals College, Daisy Lodge, Prophet Magaya and his partners all contributed generously towards the successful staging of Sunday’s match,” said Gwesela.

Given that Zifa rely heavily on the Warriors home games, their last source of major revenue unless major sponsors come on board, is the CHAN qualifier against Lesotho at Barbourfields next month.

This is because the Nations Cup campaign will resume in March next year when the Warriors travel to Swaziland before they host Sihlangu at Rufaro in the same month.

Meanwhile, Callisto Pasuwa has reaffirmed his commitment to continuing contract talks with Zifa despite the frustrations he has often endured during his spell as both Warriors and Young Warriors coach.

Pasuwa is currently working on “a gentlemen’s agreement’’ with Zifa with no formal contract agreed upon. The coach’s manager Gibson Mahachi said they would give the association “reasonable” time to come up with their offer. Mahachi also revealed that Zifa have paid about 90 percent of what they owed the coach, paving the way for contract talks to move into gear.

“Now that the match against Guinea has come and gone I don’t think there are going to be major distractions. We’ve been working to create a platform for the negotiation of the deal.

“We last had discussions with Zifa about two weeks ago and we resolved to give them time to come up with their proposal, which the coach is still waiting for.

“From the discussion we’ve had and with the way we’ve been engaging, I think these things have to be finalised soon. We’re going to give them ample time to negotiate but we can’t go for another month without knowing exactly what their position is.

“They should come out in the open on whether they want the coach on full-time basis or part-time. So we’ll not engage anyone else at this moment except Zifa. But if we don’t get any joy then the coach could be open to other options at club level if he is available. Life has to go on,” said Mahachi.

PAY UP! lBosso risk losing trio to Bantu Rovers lCan’t afford to pay loan fees

STRUGGLING Bulawayo giants Highlanders FC are in danger of losing the trio of Obidiah Tarumbwa, Teenage Hadebe and Nqobizitha Masuku before the end of the season after failing to honour the existing loan agreement with their parent club.

Zifa Southern Region Division One league side Bantu Rovers are reportedly unhappy with Bosso’s failure to pay the loan fees and are now mulling withdrawing the services of their players. Tarumbwa, Masuku and Hadebe are on a season long loan at Bosso.

Sources said Highlanders also owes the three players substantial amounts related to the deal. Highlanders, who beat How Mine and Chicken Inn for the services of Hadebe and Masuku, were supposed to have offset the outstanding loan fees on August 31.

“Highlanders agreed to clear the loan fees by August 31 but they’re yet to do that.

“The players have even told Bantu Rovers that they’re afraid of losing out on the money owed to them as part of the deal once the loan deal expires,” said a source.

“The players said Bosso haven’t paid them their signing on fees. The Bantu Rovers board has instructed the general manager Wilbert Sibanda to speedily deal with the matter,” the source said.

Since joining Bosso, the three players have been vital cogs in the squad, with Tarumbwa forming one of the most lethal partnerships in the league with national Under-23 forward Knox Mutizwa.

Mutizwa is the league’s leading goal scorer with 10 goals, and the player, who missed a number of games at the beginning of the season, has attributed his form to Tarumbwa’s proficiency.

Tarumbwa, whose consistent performance earned him the Bosso captaincy, has scored four goals. Masuku and Hadebe’s performances have seen them being selected as regulars in the national Under-23s. They are presently with the Young Warriors’ squad competing at the African Games in Congo Brazzaville.

Bantu Rovers’ Sibanda would neither confirm nor deny that Bosso have not honoured terms for the three players.

“That issue is between us and Highlanders. We can’t discuss that in the Press. They’re in a better position to speak about it if they so wish,” Sibanda said. Bosso chief executive officer Ndumiso Gumede said the club is committed to honouring its contractual obligations with Bantu Rovers.

“It’s true we owe them and we’ve written to them about the matter. There is an instalment that we haven’t paid, but just like any other local club, we find ourselves not in a good financial position but that’s not to say we won’t pay, we’re working on it,” said Gumede.

With Bantu Rovers ruled out of the Premier Soccer League promotion race, Gumede hinted that Bosso would be keen on re-engaging the services of Hadebe and Masuku.

However, Hadebe could prove difficult to retain as his performances have attracted the attention of a number of South African clubs including Ajax Cape Town who are home to former Bosso players Milton Ncube and Thomas Chideu.

Highlanders owe a number of their present and former players signing on fees. Two months ago, Bosso lost the services of midfielder Welcome Ndiweni, who walked out on the club after writing off about $3,000 owed to him by the club in signing on fees. Ndiweni now turns out for Southern Region Division One log leaders Bulawayo City.

Ozias Zibande also quit the Bulawayo giants and joined Gaborone United coached by former Bosso coach Rahman Gumbo in the Botswana Premier League after reportedly falling out with former Bosso coach Bongani Mafu, who was fired last week following a string of poor results.

The financially embattled Bosso were recently forced to scrounge for resources to save their property from going under the hammer after losing a Labour Court case against their former midfielder Masimba Mambare.

Highlanders, who are $500,000 in the red, owed Mambare $10,000.
